Tribute

Dr. Daniel Scott Maddix, Pharm D, passed away suddenly on Friday, April 3rd, 2020 at his home in Alameda, California at fifty-seven years of age. Daniel, known as Danny to his family and friends, was born on April 12th, 1962 to Richard and Rose Marie Maddix (née DeCarolis) at Fort Ord, California, and was the second of three sons. His memory will always live on in our hearts. His dedication to his family, generosity and charity will always be a true inspiration to us.

Danny was the ever faithful, loyal and dutiful husband to his wife of nearly twenty years, Denise Margaret Maddix (née Cervelli), and adoring son to his father Richard Maddix, who both preceded him in death.  He is the loving and devoted father to his daughter, Danielle Robinson (née Maddix) and son-in-law, Joseph Robinson; the very proud and adoring Nonno to his granddaughter, Denise Margaret Robinson; the beloved son of his mother, Rose Marie Maddix; the treasured brother of Jeffrey and Cheryl Maddix and Michael and Kathryn Maddix; the caring and cherished uncle of Matthew and Katie Maddix, Jennifer Maddix, Shannon and Tyler Coughran and Mitchell Maddix; the dedicated son-in-law of Joseph and Catherine Cervelli; the admired brother-in-law of Joseph and Laura Cervelli; the revered nephew of Nicholas and Laurie Ratto, Mark and Margaret Ratto and Margaret Ratto; the affectionate cousin of Angela and Paula Ratto.

Danny graduated from North Salinas High School in 1980. In 1985, he graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of the Pacific School of Pharmacy and was the class valedictorian. Danny was a beloved leader and colleague at the San Francisco VA Health Care System for over thirty-five years. In 1986, Danny completed a PGY1 residency in clinical pharmacy at the San Francisco VA Health Care System (SFVAHCS).  He began his professional career at SFVAHCS in 1986 as an Inpatient Clinical Pharmacist.  Danny was passionately interested in the treatment of infectious diseases, the use of antimicrobial agents and antimicrobial stewardship. In 1989, he assumed the role of Infectious Diseases Clinical Pharmacist and was largely responsible for the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program at the medical center.  He held this position for thirty years and was highly respected by pharmacists and physicians for his vast knowledge in the field of Infectious Diseases. In 1995, Danny assumed an additional role as Drug Information Coordinator until 2001 when he was promoted to the position of Associate Chief of Pharmacy. He continued his work in Infectious Diseases until 2019 because he was so passionate about the field. As Associate Chief, he was principally involved in drug policy and formulary management and had oversight of the Pharmacy’s $61 million drug budget. Danny was an Associate Clinical Professor of Pharmacy at UCSF and Adjunct Faculty at the University of the Pacific School of Pharmacy.  He was also an active member of the UCSF ID Management Program (IDMP) Working Group, and was actively involved in the training of numerous Pharmacy Students, Residents and UCSF Infectious Disease Fellows. He published multiple textbook chapters and publications in peer-reviewed journals on Antimicrobial Therapy over the last twenty years.

In addition to being very dedicated to his work, Danny was also most importantly devoted to his family.  On November 12th, 1988, he married Denise at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Alameda, in which parish he has remained a devout practitioner of the faith. He always went above and beyond for his family, whether it was bringing flowers to his wife’s grave every Saturday, a true testament of his undying love for her to taking his mother, father-in-law and mother-in-law to every medical appointment to never missing any of his daughter’s or niece’s and nephew’s graduations to being present at the birth of his precious granddaughter. He found enjoyment in tending to the exquisite garden that he maintained for his wife Denise.  He also loved going to Disneyland with his family every year. Another favorite family tradition was the annual Christmas trip to Capitola Beach with his daughter, mother, brothers, and their families.

Danny was an avid sports fan. He rooted for his teams, the Oakland Raiders and A’s and the Cal Bears, attending many games with friends and family. He also enjoyed his Sunday morning basketball games with his dear friends.

On Monday, April 13th, he will be interred alongside his wife, Denise, at the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Hayward at a private graveside service and reunited with her in eternal happiness and peace.  A recitation of the Rosary occurred before internment, and a memorial Mass of Christian burial will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions instead be made in memory of Danny or Denise to:
