Fran,

I am in still in shock to hear of your passing. I really admired your passion for academia and your determination in life. A single mother pursuing her dream and reaching the stars. Our student/professor relationship was at times rocky and you were stern in reminding me that you have to work hard to achieve your dreams. I didn't understand it at the time but I thank you for your advice. May you rest in peace and keep shining in your new home.

Fran, you shaped me more than you could ever imagine. As a transfer student at UCSC, you lit a spark that carried me through my sociology PhD. A great deal of what I learned about teaching, and remaining teachable, I learned in your classrooms. Now, as a professor, I do my best to channel you every time I step in front of a classroom.
I remember you saying not to become a "jack of all trades and master of none." You were a jack of all trades and a master of many. Your passion for so many parts of life inspired me to be a jack of all trades, and my life is fuller for that. As many have shared, you helped to carry me through some of the most difficult parts of my education, and you were an incredible friend and mentor. I am forever grateful for the impact you had, and continue to have, on my life. I will also always remember your stories/lessons, both serious and funny-- about decaf coffee, archives, institutions, flower arrangements, relationships, and questioning (always questioning) everything.
Love,
Shae

Dear Dr. Guerra,

Thank you for your continuous support! You made sure that I finished my B.A. even though I was confronted with challenges and hard situations. You reminded me to be humble, take it all in, and showed me compassion when I needed it. You help me finish college and realize how meaningful the studies of sociology was to me, and. I will continue your work by honoring the truth, become a guiding force for others, and to love the art of meaningful work. Thank you for bringing the best out of me and acknowledging my circumstances at the same time, because of you I completed my B.A. degree, a masters, and now pursuing an educational doctorate.

Rest in Paradise,
Angela Lehua Esver Matian

Professor Francesca Guerra believed in me. Touched my life and will always be remembered by all her students. I was honored to be her student. Her lessons go beyond classroom walls. Her life may begone but her passion for teaching will live on. Thank you for everything you did Fran, and the positive influence you had in this life!🌹💐🌻💌
