Gerald Kenneth “Jerry” New, age 73, passed away July 30, 2019 at his home in Alameda. He was born February 23, 1946 in San Francisco to Kenneth and Elizabeth (Theman) New. While he spent his younger years growing up in San Francisco, his family eventually moved to Alameda, where he graduated from Encinal High School. Alameda is where he met his wife, Silvia (Bucciarelli) New. They were married at St. Joseph’s Basilica on August 20, 1967. Jerry served in the United States Navy during Vietnam aboard the USS Constellation. His time in the Navy inspired a lifelong enthusiasm for military fiction and non-fiction reading, and he loved authors like Tom Clancy. Father to Alison and Wesley, he dedicated himself to his children. He exemplified what it meant be a good father, and will be remembered by his children as a gentle, caring man who always put them first. Although he had no formal culinary training, he could give any classically trained chef a run for their money. He shared his passion for cooking with a love of painting, wood working, gardening, writing, poetry, flying, astronomy and fishing. He loved fishing- and he was good at it. He loved the outdoors. He loved backpacking and camping.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday February 22, 2020 at 11:00AM at Greer Family Mortuary, 2694 Blanding Ave, Alameda, CA 94501.
