Oliver Ramos Magno, 70, died on January 2, 2018 at Alameda Hospital. Born November 13, 1947, in Bacoor, Cavite, Philippines to the late Manuel and Teodorica Magno. Oliver was a family man who always put his kids and wife ahead of his needs or wants. He was the oldest of 9 siblings and joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 19 to seek a better future for his family. Proud grandfather to his 3 yr old grandson Sam who could make his face light up like no other, and he would have been overjoyed to meet his newest grandchild Leo, who was born 3 days after he passed. After serving 21 years in the U.S. Navy as a chef and then 20 years in the U.S. Postal Service, Oliver retired to enjoy traveling, tending to his garden of numerous vegetables and fruits, cooking for and spending time with family and friends. He was a friend to all and naturally had a way to make people around him feel comfortable. He was known to have a sharp memory and was an animated story-teller often sharing fond memories of his childhood or tales of his former Navy days. He loved to laugh and especially loved to poke fun at his wife Gloria who after 44 years of marriage still fell for most of his jokes. He loved to visit family and friends in the Philippines and help those in need. He picked up a book and read the newspaper everyday — he could carry a conversation on many topics but enjoyed debating about politics or sports. He belonged to the dying breed of do-it-yourself men, learning his handy man skills from his books or visits from the local home improvement stores. Oliver believed in the simple life, clearly valuing love over money. Oliver is survived by his wife Gloria M. Magno; two children, daughter Rowena Romero and husband Ben, son Lorenz Magno and wife Kathryn; grandchildren Samuel Oliver Romero and Leo Bautista Magno; 8 younger siblings, many nieces, nephews and extended family. He is preceded by his parents, his son Allen Ver Magno and daughter Irene Magno. Visitation will be from 4:00 until 9:00 PM at Greer Family Mortuary in Alameda, CA on January 18 & 19. Funeral mass to be held at 10:00 AM at St. Barnabas Church in Alameda, CA on January 20 followed by interment at St. Mary Cemetery in Oakland, CA.
