Ricardo “Rick” Mejia

February 7, 1927 – October 31, 2021

Longtime resident of Alameda, CA

Rick was born in Dagupan City, Philippines, to his loving parents Cornelio and Maria Mejia. As a young man, he joined the U.S. Navy and was a proud veteran of three wars:  World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.

Retiring after 22 years of active duty, Rick worked for the Department of the Navy as a civil servant for over two decades. He was known for being independent, hardworking, and having a dry sense of humor.  He enjoyed watching sports, particularly Los Angeles teams, as a result of having been stationed in Southern California for many years in different duty stations.

His other passions included, cooking, puzzles, and spending time with family, especially his four grandchildren.  Family was his greatest joy - Rick treasured family events and being surrounded by loved ones.

He is survived by his wife of more than 68 years, Ping Mejia, daughters Zenaida Sims (husband Scott), Madeline Halliday (husband Paul), Melanie Mejia, Marnie Mejia-Jones (husband Eric) and son Ken Mejia (wife Hygeia).  Rick had four grandchildren:  Angie Sims-Fu (husband Martin), Ricky Sims (wife Cesel), Kahlea Mejia, and Kash Mejia.  He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings:  brothers Raymundo Mejia, Jose Mejia, and sisters: Rosario Sison, Segundina Ramos, Avelia Peralta.

Rick was an outstanding husband and extraordinary father who will be greatly missed.  We love you Pop!

Family and friends may visit after 3:00 p.m. and attend the vigil service at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 9th and attend the funeral mass at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 10th. All services will be held at St. Joseph's Basilica.
