Our beloved Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Aunt, and friend, Sixta Vela Castillo Vinluan, passed away peacefully at home in Alameda on January 28th , 2023, at the young age of 95. She was surrounded by her loving family. Sixta was born in Naguilayan, Binmaley, Pangasinan, Philippines to Florentino Castillo and Sinfrosa Vela. As the third born and eldest daughter, Sixta joins her siblings Pedro/Eding, Antonio/Tony, Eufemia/Oping, Clarita/Aying, Petronilo/Petong, and Alfredo/Joe in everlasting light. Sixta married Mariano Austria Vinluan in 1947, immigrated to the U.S.and settled in Alameda, CA, where they raised their family. Sixta is survived by her children – Marty, Ermena (deceased 2018), Susan, Cris, and Grace; grandchildren – Tony, Cana, Jordan, Arnold James (AJ), Alexa, Arianna, Filomene, Huntly; great-grandchildren Kaitlyn, Madison, Caleb; sons and daughter in law – Frank, Arnold, Carolyn; sister Purita and nieces Emerita, Evelyn, Ermena. Sixta studied at Comer & Doran Cosmetology School in Oakland, CA, and received her license in 1960. She eventually opened her salon in Alameda. Later in retirement, she continued to provide salon services to the elderly in Alameda convalescent homes. Sixta was a devoted wife and mother. She took pride in being a homemaker – she enjoyed cooking, sewing, and crocheting. She enjoyed traveling and journeyed to Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Mexico, Canada, Hawaii, and frequent trips home to the Philippines. She enjoyed socializing with friends and neighbors – playing Tripoli card games, bowling, and occasional jaunts to Reno and Las Vegas. She participated in social clubs focused on family camping and stock investment. Sixta had a joie de vivre. She was very friendly, a great conversationalist, and had a wonderful sense of humor and a quick wit. Her smiles and laughs were infectious. She enjoyed reading, tending her garden of flowers and vegetables, and cultivating orchids. For every flower that bloomed, her love for her garden grew and was admired by all in her neighborhood of 74 years. She was the light of our lives and though missed dearly, we will always be reminded of her kind spirit.
