Sofia Villegas

Sofia Villegas, age 93, passed away January 8, 2021 with her family by her side. She was born September 30, 1927 in Los Angeles, California to Francisco and Louisa Martinez.  She was raised in Juarez, Mexico.  As a teenager she came with her family to Oakland, California. 

Sofia met Rudy P. Villegas in Oakland and they were married in 1943.  They were married for 71 years before his passing in 2014.

Sofia and Rudy owned and operated The Tejano Club in Oakland for over 30 years.  At The Tejano she cooked and served delicious Mexican food for countless customers, family and friends.

Sofia loved to listen to music and dance.  She enjoyed going out to dances.  She like to play cards, going to Cache Creek and the Little Casino.  She also loved going on drives anywhere, except hills or mountains.  Recently she couldn’t get enough of playing Bingo with her family, for money of course.  She always had to play with 3 cards, while everyone else had 2.

She loved family gatherings and reminiscing about old times. She enjoyed spending time and caring for all the little children.  She especially loved and enjoyed her family.

Sofia is survived by her children Rudy and Sue Villegas Jr., Louis and Dottie Villegas, Linda Castro and David Villegas; Grandchildren, Cynthia Cornejo, Kathy Carillo, Tara Mendivil, David Villegas Jr., Tina Arellano, Joseph Villegas, Sean Villegas, Bonita Pouard and Daniel Castro; 19 Great Grandchildren and 8 Great Great Grandchildren; not to go without mentioning her loving dog and companion, Flaca and cat Meow Meow.  She is predeceased by her husband Rudy, daughter Rosie Villegas, son Daniel Villegas and grandson Jason Villegas.

Due to Covid 19, private services will be held on Thursday, January 21, 2021.  Sofia will be laid to rest at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Oakland.
